C.S. Lewis Reading Room Refurbishment at Queen’s University Belfast
Fit-out of the CS Lewis Reading Room at the university’s McClay Library, a project awarded as part of our current Maintenance & Minor Works contract with Queens.
Works included handcrafted shelving by specialist joinery firm Hillside Interiors and frameless glazed screens by Space NI.
The room houses a replica of the wardrobe door used in the feature film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the shelves will display ‘The Siku Quanshu’ which translates to “Complete Library in Four Sections” – an extensive Chinese literary collection commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty in 1772.
This monumental work is arranged in four sections: classics, histories, masters, and belles-lettres, each bound in the colours of one of the four seasons, for convenient browsing. It is one of the largest compilations of books in Chinese history, encompassing the breadth of Chinese scholarship up to that point. The collection was donated to the Library by Dr Moses Li.
Project Manager, Kevin Kelly said:
“Killowen Contracts delivered this project through our Measured Term Contract working to strict timelines in a busy live environment with a large circulation of students and staff. The scope required a high-quality finish to joinery and glazed screens and this was delivered and well received by staff and students in the building.“
