Project Summary:

A Block/School House, designed by William Fogarty, was constructed between 1865 and 1868. Key features of the building include red Belfast brickwork; ‘blonde’ sandstone quoins, detailing to the windows, bays and doors and Scrabo sandstone plinth.

The Building is a prominent landmark at 1Malone Road, Belfast, BT9 6RT. McGinnity Gantley Ltd carried out a Planned Maintenance Survey and report of the entire Campus in 1997 and in consolation with the College developed a strategy for undertaken general repairs, improvements and Health & Safety improvements. A Block/School House was identified in the report as requiring significant capital expenditure.

Methodist College commenced a programme of repair/refurbishment of the external elements to A Block/School House on a phased basis from 2001 and concluding in 2006. The project has been part funded by Environment and Heritage Service and the Department of Education.

   
Project Description:

The work included the repair/refurbishment of roof coverings, leadwork, rainwater goods, chimneys, sash windows, repointing brickwork, sandstone repairs and general improvement.

The construction Team comprised Mr. John Robinson, Director of Services, Mr. David Gantley Consulting Building Surveyor and Director with McGinnity Gantley Ltd, Belfast, Mr. Noel McGivern, Principal Contractor and Director Killowen Contracts Ltd, Warrenpoint and Mr. Joe Mowbrary, Sandstone and Lightening Conductor Specialist sub-contractor, of J & J Mowbrary, Belfast.

Each year the project received the full support of The Principal and Board of Governors with significant support from Dr. W Mulryne (former Headmaster) and Mr. John Mulholland of Mulholland & Doherty.

The overall project construction costs of £2,000,000.00 equated to an annual spend of £330,000.00 excluding VAT.
