Project Summary:

The works at FM Environmental, Newry consisted of the construction of a single storey warehouse with two story office accommodation. The general construction methods for the project included piled foundations and ground beams to the substructure with precast hollow core floor slabs forming the floor structure, load-bearing block work to the superstructure with part facing brick/part insulated cladding walls, suspended ceilings and a steel roof membrane.

Project Description:

The site is located in a busy industrial estate environment and the existing adjacent workshop and office accommodation remained in full operation throughout the duration of the project, therefore a duty of care was taken by Killowen Contracts Ltd. to ensure the Health, Safety and Welfare of employees and members of the general public whilst works were carried out. Like all projects a duty of care was taken to ensure the adjacent public footpaths and roadways were kept clear of all mud, rubble and other debris at all times. The overall contract was carried out in a manner that imposed minimal disruption to the day-to-day running of the business.

The internal finishes are generally exposed block work to the warehouse with plastered walls, vinyl flooring, carpet to selected areas and suspended ceilings to the office accommodation. All stair units within the building were precast concrete units. Metal stud partitioning was used within the two storey office accommodation. Specialist Mechanical and Electrical works were carried out to provide a sufficient ventilation system for the warehouse, for example.

Externally the associated site works included the provision of hard paved areas around the building and all required drainage works i.e. inspection chambers and precast concrete ring manholes. Butterley New Irish Rose facing brick was used to form the outer leaf of the cavity walling together with polyester powder coated aluminium windows and glazing screens adding a modern emphasis to the building.
